Job Description
Respiratory therapists assist physicians in the analysis, treatment and care of patients with cardiopulmonary and respiratory disorders. They assist physicians in the technical features of diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease. Respiratory therapists are engaged in hospitals, public health centres, extended care facilities and respiratory home care companies.
Tasks & Responsibilities
Respiratory therapists do some or all of the following tasks:
- Do diagnostic tests, like arterial blood gas analysis and cardiopulmonary purpose tests
- Function and monitor respiratory equipment to administer treatments like oxygen, humidified air, oxygen-air mixtures or medications
- Manage, monitor, uphold and test a range of diagnostic and therapeutic apparatus
- Assess patients and execute or aid with interventions like airway maintenance, inductions, line insertions and intubations
- Accomplishartificial respiration and external cardiac massage
- Help with transfer of high-risk patients
- Oversee and instruct students and other respiratory therapists
- Partake in home care programs for severe respiratory patients and give patient and family education
- Contribute in research related to pulmonary and cardiac disorders.
Employment requirements
- Respiratory therapists require completing 3 to 4 years in hospital, college or university degree program in respiratory therapy.
- They require the completion of a respiratory therapy or authorized nursing program with at least one year of work experience as a respiratory therapist or registered nurse
- Qualifying college or university program in respiratory training
- Certification is needed for respiratory therapists in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and Alberta.
- Documentation by Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion is needed for Respiratory therapists.
- They require a two-year college certificate in an related health discipline like respiratory therapy, a university degree in a related science or nursing diploma
- Qualifying in college post-diploma program in cardiovascular technology and plus training in pulmonary technology during courses or managed on-job clinical training.
- Authorizationby Canadian Association of Cardio-pulmonary Technologists (CACPT) might be needed.
